Watering in Your Flowerhouse

The plants in your FlowerHouse™ will need less water than if they were outside. With the vents closed, the humid conditions inside enable the soil to retain more moisture. Because of this, take care not to over water your plants. On the other hand, under watering is still a danger. The soil will dry out more quickly as you ventilate and heat your FlowerHouse™. In order to determine whether or not your plants need to be watered, insert one finger into the soil. If the soil is damp to the touch, your plants can go another day without water. If the soil is dry and dusty, your plants need to be watered immediately. |
When using a hose sprayer to water your plants, choose the lowest setting, "mist" or "rain". A forceful sprayer can disturb your plants or the soil they are in. You can also put your plants at risk by watering the leaves. Instead of watering from above, water the soil under the leaf canopy. When the leaves are consistently wet, your plants are more susceptible to disease, such as stem or root rot.

Temperature & Ventilation

Temperature plays a vital role in the health of your FlowerHouse™ plants. Thermometers are important to help you monitor the temperature. A digital thermometer is ideal because it can show you the high and low temperatures of the day and night. When setting up your thermometer, try to find a position where it is not in direct sunlight. Place it in an open-ended, light colored box to get the most accurate reading. Air will flow through the open ends, and the light color will block the sunlight. Although the ideal temperature for the growth of each plant varies, most plants survive well in temperatures between 50° and 85°F (15° and 29°C). There are a number of ways to keep your plants within their ideal temperature range. |
Heating your FlowerHouse™ Suggestions:
• Minimize the amount of time the doors are open.
• Completely close all of the vents
• Place large containers filled with water inside your FlowerHouse™. The water will absorb the heat throughout the day. During nighttime they will release the heat back into your FlowerHouse™. Metal containers work more efficiently than plastic containers, but both work well.
• Grow lights not only provide adequate light for your plants, but they provide heat as well.
Cooling your FlowerHouse™ Suggestions:
• Secure the shade cover to the roof.
• Open the vents and secure them with the window straps.
• Set up a fan in one corner of your FlowerHouse™, it will create an air current for cooling air. To ventilate even more, include a second fan set up in the opposite corner of the first. This will create an especially effective circular air current.
• Check with your local garden center for other shade options. Most garden centers will carry a washable, spray-on shade cover.
| WARNING: CAUTION! • Use extreme caution when using water near an electrical heater. Electrocution can cause serious injury or death. • In cooler weather, open the vents one at a time so your plants do not suffer from a sudden gust of cool air. |
Maintenance & Storage
While working with plants and soil, your FlowerHouse™ is sure to get dirty. With a low pressured sprayer, hose down the walls to be rid of dirt and dust. If mold or mildew has grown, wash away with mild soap (such as dish soap) and warm water.
Before storing your FlowerHouse™, be sure that it is clean and completely dry. Mold and mildew may grow and stain your FlowerHouse™ if it is stored wet or damp.

Avoid drafts, sudden changes in temperature, or dry, burned out air. Plants, like people, cannot thrive in poor atmospheric conditions. In bright cold weather, it is easy to keep air fresh. Then the greenhouse traps more than enough heat from the sun, even though it may be freezing outside. During sunny days, open side vents 1 inch and/or roll down one door 1 inch from top. In the event of very windy weather, close vents and doors on the windward side. Seal completely during heavy snowfall and storms. On cold nights, artificial heat keeps air in motion. Leave only a small crack opening in door or venturing long spells of cloudy weather, you will need to use artificial heat during the day to maintain your ideal temperature.* Placing several pails of water inside your greenhouse will help to raise the humidity level.Remember to water!

A new garden season starts during the cold brisk days of autumn, but light is at a premium then for there are many cloudy days and the arc of the sun is very low. At this time, plants tend to make soft growth that is susceptible to mildew. Good air circulation is necessary to keep them healthy and disease free.
Don’t forget to water! Prepare clean pots, seed flats, and fresh soil for the greenhouse. Winter gardening is much more pleasant and productive when supplies are ready for use.Fall is also a great time to start a new compost heap for spring planting. The warm fall rains provide the moisture needed, and freezing and thawing throughout the winter do wonders for soil structure.

Choosing a Location
|

While it is entirely up to you where you place your FlowerHouse™, keep in mind that its locality will make all the difference to your garden. Place your FlowerHouse™ on flat, even ground and if possible, raised above the surrounding ground. This will allow for good drainage of rainwater. Choose an area where there will be maximum exposure to the sun. Your FlowerHouse™ garden will benefit from the immense sunlight. If all day exposure is not possible, morning sun from the east is second best. With sun first thing in the morning your plants can begin photosynthesis early, thus, maximize growth throughout the day. If you are planning to use your FlowerHouse™ year-round, place it where it would allow for the most winter sun exposure. |
FlowerHouse™ products should not be used in extremely high winds that exceed 70 mph. Use in such conditions may result in damage to your FlowerHouse™ or plants, or severe injury to you. Protect your FlowerHouse™ from prevailing winds. The winter prevailing winds are especially detrimental to the vitality of your plants. If you are unsure of the direction of the prevailing wind, check with your local weather service. If possible, set your FlowerHouse™ where your garage, home, or other structure can provide defense from the wind. But be cautious of trees that may block needed sun. By placing your FlowerHouse near your home, you are sure to spend more quality time in your garden. Large trees and shrubs can help guard your FlowerHouse™ from wind, as well. The main door should be located downwind to protect your plants from a blast of outside air when entering or exiting your FlowerHouse™.
Some added features to the FlowerHouse™ assist in its protection from the wind. Once your FlowerHouse™ is fully erected, secure it using all available high-wind tie-downs, and all supplied stakes. Along the bottom, place heavy materials on the skirting. Use decorative materials, such as stones, bricks, landscape timers, or potted plants, to weigh it down. In addition to their practical purpose, these materials can be used to decorate the inside and outside of your FlowerHouse™. You should plan to cover the skirting in the interior. Make sure to do so before installing any shelving or plant benches.
As you water your plants, it is impossible not to get water on the ground. To avoid a muddy floor in the interior of your FlowerHouse™, cover it with pea rock, fieldstone, bricks, gravel or mulch.
Before setting up your FlowerHouse™, be sure that it does not violate any law or ordinance in your community.

Maximizing Space Usage

|
Plant benches or adjustable shelving units along the walls can provide you with a good way to optimize your working space. The area on and below the bench can be used to place your plants. Add shelves for more plants, or remove them for more space. Moreover, raised benches will remove some of the strains from your back with less bending, allowing you to spend more quality time in your FlowerHouse™ garden. |
Some gardeners may prefer to make use of the space with trellises. These can be constructed out of just about anything. A steel, wood or plastic frame can be covered with nylon netting or chicken wire. Attach the material to the frame with nails, staples, or wire. The purpose is to give the frame enough support to remain standing tall, but leave enough room for plants to grow up and through the materials used.
Some plants do not immediately take to trellising. These plants require a little extra coercion. To keep them growing upward, you may need to tie them to the trellis. Any number of household items can be used, string, shoelaces, wire hangers, or even old video or audio tape. Remember to be cautious when tying up your plants not tying too tight as it could cut the plant. Other plants such as cucumbers are perfect for trellising. Tendrils, like limbs, grab onto the trellis without the aid of a string to help it up.
Another common material for trellising plants is an old nylon stocking. They are especially ideal for fruiting plants. Tie one end of the stocking to hold the plant to the trellis. Use the other end to slip over the fruit of the plant. As the fruit grows, the stocking will grow with it and it will also hold the fruit closer to the trellis and prevent its weight from breaking off the plant.
The trellis can also serve as a base for hanging baskets. Attach a hook to the top with enough room for the basket to fit. Hanging baskets cannot be hung from the ceiling of the FlowerHouse™, as it would collapse and could result in serious injury.
